Math skills got you like !@#$%#?
The abrupt shift to online learning in the spring and the uncertainty of the school year ahead has parents and educators rightfully concerned about kids’ learning. While the world and school might seem upside down, there is no need to panic. Kids can learn effectively at home and actually learn best while at play.
Kids are naturally curious. From birth, they learn about the world through constant exploration and experimentation. They learn by watching, listening, and interacting.
Kids learn best while at play. Play is a powerful and important part of childhood. It naturally and positively influences the social, physical, emotional and cognitive development of children.
The best learning happens when children play. As a 7th grade public school teacher, I created the first of my math games to engage students who had finished their classwork. The games offered a fun, engaging, and safe space in which they could practice their skills.
When I started working with younger children as an academic coach, I decided against using workbooks, flash cards, or apps in our sessions. I felt they perpetuated the association of learning with work. Instead, I developed more games, all of which could be played with a simple deck of cards. While the students were aware they were learning, it was clear the games did not feel like schoolwork. They were laughing, shouting, playing!
Thus, Card Sharks was born––a book of math card games that teaches and reinforces foundational math skills. The games cover content from elementary and middle school.
The games contain elements of strategy, speed, skill, randomness, luck, and competition. But the best part is watching kids enjoy learning.
When children learn through play, they view learning as part of their every day experience. So, play together and watch in awe as they explore, learn, and grow.
Have fun!
