Moms, Startle Easy?

Living with a Startle Reflex: How a Simple Doorbell Changed Everything

By Liza Maltz

Actual footage of me every time I hear a loud or sudden noise (ok it’s not me but you know)

Let me tell you about a quirky aspect of my household: my hyperactive startle reflex. You might think a little jump scare now and then is no big deal, but in my house, it’s practically an Olympic sport. I’ve been perfecting my startled leap ever since an incident in my younger years, which, if you ask me, left me with a mild case of PTSD. The result? Every time my kid walks into my room, I rocket three feet into the air and my neck does an Exorcist-style swivel. Talk about making an entrance!

They say necessity is the root of innovation, and this idea stemmed from my son having had enough of my startle reflex and finding a solution. With the wisdom of a sage and the pragmatism of a seasoned engineer, he approached me with a solution. “Mom,” he said, eyes full of determination, “I think I know what we have to do. We need doorbells.” I looked it like … what??f, a doorbell could save me from my thrice-daily mini heart attacks? I was all in.

Transforming Our Home with Doorbells

We ordered a set of these nifty doorbells. Not just one for my room, but one for his too. It’s all about establishing good habits, you know? Installation day was like opening a treasure chest – anticipation, excitement, and a sprinkle of hope that my days of surprise aerobics were over. The doorbell for my room was a game changer. Not just any game changer, but a life-altering, world-rocking revolution in household peace and quiet.

Customizable and Affordable

Before the doorbells, my son tried knocking. Bless him, he really did. But the knock was still enough to send me soaring. Now, instead of bursting into my room like the Kool-Aid Man or even gently knocking, he rings the bell, and I calmly say, “Come in.” No jumping, no shrieking, just serene, civilized entry. Who knew something so simple could make such a big difference?

And these aren’t just any doorbells. You can customize the sound and volume of the chime, and they don’t need Wi-Fi. Just plug in the base and put the battery-operated doorbell switch next to your door. You can stick it on or install it with screws. The best part? It’s only 15 bucks.

Get them here.

Honestly, it’s the little things in life. With these doorbells, our home has become a haven of tranquility. I no longer fear the spontaneous intrusion of my well-meaning child, and he’s learned the art of polite entry. It’s a win-win, really. Now, if only I could find a solution for my dogs who shriek at every random noise, (oddly enough NOT the doorbells.) sending my heart pinging like a pinball machine! If you’re a fellow jumpy soul, do yourself a favor – get a doorbell. Trust me, your heart (and neck) will thank you.
