Disconnect to Reconnect

Healthy Social Media Use For Parents And Children

Make a summer screen time routine and set goals

    •    Set a goal for the time you would like to use screens daily, for children too!

    •    Schedule screen time as you would other activities, as well as non-screen time periods including meal times.

    •    Plan to interact and play with your child or teen daily and keep this time screen-free.

Commit to confidence with social media

    •    Engage with media that makes you happy, inspired, or motivated.

    •    Stay away from social media that leads to lower confidence or negative emotions.

    •    Remember that posts do not represent someone's full life.

    •    Prioritize your opinion over those of followers.

Find balance within use of media

    •    Apart from social media use, set time for connecting with educational media (read about current events, learn a skill, or learn about a worthwhile subject area that can help you get ahead).

Prioritize sleep

    •    TO KNOW: children who overuse screens or have devices in their bedroom tend to fall asleep later and sleep less.

    •    TO KNOW: exposure to blue light and mentally stimulating content can make it harder to settle down and can disrupt sleep.

    •    Turn off screens at least half/one hour before bedtime

    •    Keep a regular sleep schedule (adults 7-8 hours, children and tweens 9-12 hours, teens 8-10 hours)

Prioritize physical health

    •    TO KNOW: watching TV shows excessively can cause weight gain (teens who watch 5 or more hours daily are more likely to become overweight, viewers often snack and this can promote obesity)

    •    Keep TV viewing under 1.5 hours for kids aged 4-9 and under 2-3 hours for teens

    •    Balance screen time with exercise

Make and stick to a plan

    •    Complete The American Academy of Pediatrics' survey to routinely plan media use in the household and customize good habits for all family members (it sets social, health, academic goals first and then incorporates media time)
